Synopsis

For clarity of colour and spontaneity of approach, few artists would use anything but watercolours; for sheer versatility, traditional oils are unbeatable. Contemporary acrylic paint has a similar consistency and behaviour to oil, but is fast-drying meaning changes can be made quickly. Gouache paint, on the other hand, is similar in application to watercolour, but has an opaque quality that allows dark colours to be overpainted with light. This comprehensive book provides clear, detailed instructions and advice on using these materials for artists at all levels of experience. One fabulous volume contains the most up-to-date and complete guide to the materials, techniques and methods essential for every artist's development. The book covers mixing paints, using colour and basic preparation, then takes the reader through all the first techniques, with step-by-step practical projects. More specialized methods are then explained, clearly and simply, for increasingly advanced and sophisticated effects. For the watercolour artist, there are practice exercises on using washes; masks and resists; spattering and sponging; sgraffito and line and wash, to name but a few, while the artist working in oils or acrylics can build their confidence with exercises on glazing; working alla prima; scumbling; painting with knives; impasto work and underpainting. In addition, there are 50 full-scale projects, specially commissioned from leading professional artists, to give the reader the chance to practice their new-found skills. All the most popular subjects - landscapes, trees and flowers, still lifes, animals, buildings and people are included. From crashing waves along a shoreline and a woodland in spring to a summer flower garden and a Moroccan Kasbah, and from a portrait of a young child and a reclining nude to a wisteria-covered archway and Indian market scene, the projects are worked in a wide range of styles to provide the greatest choice imaginable. At-a-glance step-by-step photographs, clear instructions and examples throughout provide visual guidance to ensure the book is foolproof. With tried and tested techniques and expert advice, this comprehensive book provides an invaluable practical reference work. Whether you are a complete beginner or a more experienced artist looking for inspiration and guidance, this reference book is a must.
