Synopsis

"Garden as though you will live forever." These words, from architect William Kent, explain the magic and the age-defying exhilaration of tending our own gardens. While your energy might be less and your physical capabilities more limited as you get older, spending time in the garden û digging, sowing, cultivating, fertilising, harvesting and enjoying the results of your labour û will keep you healthy, strong, positive and happy. Discover how easy it is to carry on gardening into and way beyond retirement. The first chapter looks at different kinds of homes and their gardens, ranging from a family home or an apartment or condo, to retirement homes or communities that provide extra support. The second chapter looks at planning how the garden will work in terms of location, local climate and soil type, suggesting low-maintenance planting options, and evaluating some of the problems that older people face, such as arthritis and loss of balance. There follows an overview of plants and gardens that will stimulate all five senses for those whose hearing or eyesight might be less acute. The second part of the book suggests various types of garden for the senior gardener: flower and herb gardens, fruit and vegetable gardens, and gardens with flexible features, such as containers, upright structures, raised beds or indoor gardens. A range of plans, projects and techniques are included, from planning a flower border for lasting colour, creating a lettuce garden in a container and planting vertically on walls and fences. The final chapter is an extensive directory of planting ideas, each with an ease-of-maintenance rating. This book is bursting with practical information, helpful strategies and enabling ideas for older gardeners. It will give all enthusiasts, whatever their age, the wherewithal to carry on gardening and enjoying their outside space for as long as it gives them pleasure - forever.
