Synopsis

Cliff Green has been an Everton fan for 43 years. From 2004 until 2012, while overseas, he was a regular contributor to the now defunct fanzine ‘Speke from the Harbour’. These 31 articles discuss every pressing issue of the modern day game from why England will never win anything to what happened to the obstruction rule? From racism to Rooney, from fair play to financial crises. And while this book gives a chronology of recent events in the goldfish bowl of the professional game, there’s always the underlying theme of what it is to support a team that is so close and yet so far from Champions League football. Success guaranteed by a foreign billionaire investor or heritage and self-respect preserved as the trophy cabinet gathers dust? A dilemma faced by many real fans and Cliff Green expresses this anguish better than most.

Biographie de l'auteur

Cliff Green was born in Andover, Hampshire in 1961 and he developed a love for football from an early age. He became besotted by Everton during the 1970 championship run-in idolising the Holy Trinity of Kendall, Harvey and Ball as well as his favourite centre-forward of all time, Joe Royle. After a brief career in accountancy, Cliff became a teacher, and in 1989 he left the UK to spend nearly 22 years teaching mathematics and accounting overseas. In 1999 he became Headmaster of Rainbow International School in Kampala. It was during his 12 years as leader of the largest international school in Uganda that he began writing about his beloved football club.
