Synopsis

Following his second marriage in 1907 Arthur Conan Doyle was looking to the future. The years ahead would see the birth of three children, fresh literary success and the discovery of his new faith. Those same years would also see the First World War, the final adventures of Sherlock Holmes and ridicule from the religious and scientific communities for his beliefs.

Revue de presse

No Better Place covers the years that Arthur Conan Doyle spent in Crowborough. As with the previous publications by Alistair Duncan, this is an extremely well researched and written account of a very interesting period in the life of ACD. The spiritualist period is extremely difficult to write about but Alistair has approached this very delicately and thoroughly. This volume continues from his previous books, The Norwood Author: Arthur Conan Doyle & the Norwood Years (1891-1894) and An Entirely New Country: Arthur Conan Doyle, Undershaw and The Resurrection of Sherlock Holmes. If you are wondering where the title comes from it comes from a letter from Conan Doyle to his mother Mary Doyle dated 10 November 1907 written from Hotel Regina, Place Rivoli, Paris and reads in part 'Then Saturday will bring us to Windlesham, where I shall live and die, I expect. No better place.' This book is up to the high standard of the previous two biographies which I highly recommend and I can do no more than highly recommend this new publication, as I do for the two other books by Alistair, Eliminate The Impossible (2008) and Close To Holmes (2009). --Brian Pugh (author, A Chronology Of The Life of Arthur Conan Doyle)

Biographie de l'auteur

Alistair Duncan's first acclaimed book was 'Eliminate the Impossible'; which came out in February 2008 and looks at the stories and many of the actors to have donned the deerstalker. Not content with one book he immediately began work on a second and 'Close to Holmes' was published in February 2009. 'The Norwood Author' was published in March 2010. This book looks at the years in which Arthur Conan Doyle lived in South Norwood and won the coveted 'Howlett Award' (Sherlock Holmes book of the year). 'An Entirely New Country' looks at Conan Doyle's years living in Hindhead, Surrey. It was released in December 2011.
