Synopsis

Masque is a richly gothic retelling of Gaston Leroux s phantom of the opera story by debut novelist Bethany W Pope. Centre stage is would-be opera singer Christine, who, despite being devoted to her art, attracts the attention of both the Phantom, and rich theatre owner Raoul. The resulting mix of love, rage, art and murderous intent, is explosive.

Where Leroux's original is essentially a classic mystery novel, and the musical focussed solely on the love story, Bethany Pope's version delves deep into the psyche of the tale's famous characters. The truth or otherwise of the opera ghost is not central to the tale, which instead focuses on Christine's choices between an easy life of comfort and the challenge of striving to reach the top of her profession. Pope portrays those three central characters, Christine, Raoul and Eric, the phantom, as real people with psychological depth and visceral responses to their worlds.

The result is a dark, gothic, psychological novel that will take readers by surprise and lead them deeper into the lives of these characters they already have loved for a long time.

Bethany Pope is an LBA winning author, and a finalist for the Faulkner-Wisdom Awards, the Cinnamon Press Novel competition, and the Ink, Sweat and Tears poetry commission and she was recently highly commended in this year s Poetry London Competition. She placed in the Bare Fiction Poetry Competition and the Bristol Poetry Prize.
