This book is important because it fills a gap in the market. It is an affordable and reliable quick reference guide for those who need to home in quickly on what materials are used and why, what standards they need to meet and how they can be assessed. I think the book is unique (I have not seen anything similar) in that the perspective is aimed at the user and is not unnecessarily academic. It includes key facts to aid the understanding of why materials are used and how they can be assessed. The reference to appropriate standards and test methods is particularly useful. The book appears to be aimed at the design and assessment areas of the construction industry although this is not clear from the title. I think that is where the book will have the most value. It should also be of interest to those involved in conservation and restoration of historic buildings. I would recommend the book to anyone involved in technical capacity in construction including: architects; civil engineers; surveyors; consulting engineers; and anyone involved in testing and analysis of construction materials.
