Synopsis

Through a broad and highly accessible examination of everyday use of language, this volume challenges the monolingual mindset by highlighting how languages and language-related issues surround us in many different ways, and how the latter can, if required, be addressed. The book features analysis and discussion of the use of languages within and across a range of contexts, including post-migration settlement, policy, education, language contact and intercultural communication. Focusing mainly on Australia, the book will also give readers a greater understanding of the opportunities and tensions that can develop in managing and understanding multilingualism and communication within and across communities and societies. The volume intends to make clear how ongoing research across a broad range of topics, following the model of Professor Michael Clyne, can benefit everyone in understanding and fostering the linguistic and social potential of our communities around the world.
