'That was the only thing on my mind, day and night. To escape and be free. Free from a regime which had sunk to depths I never thought mankind could reach.' D. T. Davies witnessed Nazi atrocities at first hand. Serving with the Royal Artillery, he was originally captured after the Battle of Crete in 1941. He spent three years as a prisoner of war, in Austria, then Hungary and finally at the barbaric concentration camp of Zemun, near Belgrade. These places were far removed from the rural Carmarthenshire where he was brought up, but their stench remains with him to this day. DT was awarded the Military Medal for his wartime service, but this account is no war film screenplay. There is no caricaturing or glamorizing, merely the faithful recording of events which still disturb and defy belief over 70 years on, but which also testify to the heroic resilience of the human spirit even in its darkest hours.
