Biographie de l'auteur

Daniel Defoe (c. 1660-1731) is considered to be one of the founders of the English novel, popularising the form along with such writers as Samuel Richardson. In addition to his writing, he worked as a trader and as a spy. His canon of work includes more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on a variety of topics including politics, crime and religion. His other most famous work is Moll Flanders.

Robinson Crusoe was first published in 1719 and credited Crusoe as the author, so readers believed that he was a real person. Shipwrecked, Crusoe spends 30 years on a remote tropical island before being rescued. It is thought to be one of the first novels in the realistic style and was well received from its first publication.
