Synopsis

Rosa Luxemburg is unquestionably the most important historical European woman Marxist theorist. Significantly, for the purpose of creolizing the canon, she considered her continent and the globe from an Eastern Europe that was in constant flux and turmoil. From this relatively peripheral location, she was far less parochial than many of her more centrally located interlocutors and peers. Indeed, Luxemburg's work touched on all the burning issues of her time and ours, from analysis of concrete revolutionary struggles, such as those in Poland and Russia, to showing through her analysis of primitive accumulation that anti-capitalist and anti-colonial struggles had to be intertwined, to considerations of state sovereignty, democracy, feminism, and racism. She thereby offered reflections that can usefully be taken up and reworked by writers facing continuous and new challenges to undo relations of exploitation through radical economic and social transformation Luxemburg touches on all aspects of what constitutes revolution in her work; the authors of this volume show us that, by creolizing Luxemburg, we can open up new paths of understanding the complexities of revolution.

Jane Anna Gordon is Professor of Political Science and Social and Critical Inquiry (Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) at the University of Connecticut, USA. She is author of Statelessness and Contemporary Enslavement, Creolizing Political Theory, and Why They Couldn't Wait, co-author of Of Divine Warning, and, most recently, co-editor of Creolizing Rosa Luxemburg and The Politics of Richard Wright. President of the Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) from 2014-2017, Gordon continues to direct the CPA Summer School and to co-edit the organization's two book series, Creolizing the Canon and Global Critical Caribbean Studies. With Lewis R. Gordon, she is Executive Editor of the open access journal, Philosophy and Global Affairs.

Drucilla Cornell was a distinguished Professor Emerita of Political Science, Women's and Gender Studies, and Comparative Literature at Rutgers University as well as Professor Extraordinaire of Law at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and visiting professor at Birkbeck, University of London. She was the author and editor of over twenty books and numerous articles and was widely influential in the fields of feminist theory, legal theory, Continental philosophy, and South African jurisprudence. Her most prominent books include Beyond Accommodation: Ethical Feminism, Deconstruction, and the Law (1991; 2nd ed: 1999); The Philosophy of the Limit (1992); The Imaginary Domain: Abortion, Pornography & Sexual Harassment (1995); Moral Images of Freedom (2008); Clint Eastwood and Issues of American Masculinity (2009); and Law and Revolution in South Africa (2014). She was also the director of the uBuntu Project, a research and advocacy project into the role of indigenous values in the new constitutional dispensation in South Africa, which she founded in 2002.
