Susan Stratton lives in Cornwall with her husband Jeff, who illustrated the story, and her dog Honey. They live near the beautiful cliffs of Whitsand Bay, the inspiration for the setting of Brave. When the author was ten years of age she underwent major heart surgery, which, at the time, was experimental and very risky. Sophie, one of the two main characters of Brave, faces the same challenge.
