Middlemarch

Since its first appearance in 1871-2, Middlemarch has been hailed by successive generations of writers and readers for its authentic view of life in a small English town in the run-up to the Reform Bill of 1832. Addressing such themes as marriage, religion, hypocrisy and political reform, Middlemarch follows the relationships of various couples and their success or failure, placing the position of women in society at the centre of the work. In 2007, an author poll conducted by Time Magazine placed the novel as one of the 10 greatest ever written.
A leading writer of the Victorian era, George Eliot was the pseudonym of Mary Anne Evans (1819-80). She was the author of seven novels that included Silas Marner and The Mill on the Floss, as well as Middlemarch. She also wrote poetry and worked as a journalist and translator. Her first published work appeared in 1857, although she had completed a number of translations of other works in the early 1850s.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts . to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.Described by some as the greatest novel in the English Language, Middlemarch paints a captivating portrait of provincial life at the time of the Industrial Revolution. The story centres on the idealistic Dorothea Brooke and the pioneering Tertius Lydgate and their disastrous marriages to unsuitable partners. George Eliot also draws on a huge cast of other finely drawn characters to reflect facets of humankind, in all its fragility and complexity. As separate stories interweave and drama unfolds, Eliot uses these ordinary, 'unhistoric' lives to contemplate the colossal and the profound.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Arcturus Classics series brings together high-quality paperback editions of classics works, presented with contemporary graphic cover designs.
