The Troubles may have developed into a sectarian conflict, but the violence was sparked by a small band of leftists who wanted Derry in October 1968 to be a repeat of Paris in May of the same year. Simon Prince is Senior Lecturer in Canterbury Christ Church University's School of Humanities. His research concerns relations between the local, national and transnational-shaped protest movements and the production of violence. His publications include Belfast and Derry in Revolt: A New History of the Start of the Troubles (co-authored with Geoffrey Warner, 2011).
