Synopsis

This title supports the following learning for Key Stage 2 Science. Students should be taught to: Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled; identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle. Know that some materials dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance form a solution. Use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating; demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes; explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials, and that this is not usually reversible. Each book in this series of 10 gives students the chance to work scientifically: 1. Ask questions and use scientific enquiries and evidence to answer them 2. Set up simple practical enquiries and tests 3. Make observations, take measurements, use scientific equipment 4. Gather, record, classify and present data using scientific language, drawings, labelled diagrams and charts 5. Use results to draw conclusions, make predictions and ask new questions. This series is supported with free downloadable teacher resources and worksheets.
