In 1973, Scratch finally returned home to Salcombe in South Devon and went on to spend the next three decades fishing in every sea area, from Dover to Rockall.

Billy “Scratch” Hitchen has lived a life that could never be repeated. One of the country’s first NHS babies, he ran away to sea at 14 and stayed there in various ventures for over forty years. Surviving storms and groundings, collisions and near fatal accidents, he finally came ashore and started two businesses which he has run successfully for the past 12 years. Both are still running today. Scratch still lives in Salcombe in South Devon.
