Kate Riley came to Canna to cover maternity leave and stayed as headteacher for six years, during which she researched and documented the history of the school. Since her retirement she has lived in Dumfries and Galloway with her husband.

The school roll at its height had 16 pupils but in recent years was sometimes reduced to just one.
