Synopsis

The most famous literary figure in the Eighteenth Century was Samuel Johnson LLD. His Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1755, contained more than 40,000 entries and was the largest dictionary of English at the time. Although it was not the first dictionary of English, and Johnson was not a linguist, its publication made the doctor famous. Always associated with Johnson was James Boswell, a Scots lord who met him on 400 occasions. Boswell was fascinated by the Great Lexicographer and collected everything he could with the intention of writing a biography. What Boswell produced was the first great modern biography. He had no interest in reciting chronological events and moralizing upon them, What he presented was an account of his subject "without reserve." This one-man play is a vehicle for revealing Johnson through his own words and transporting the audience back to an era where with and conversation were profoundly admired.
