Synopsis

Preaching God’s message explained with jokes as Jesus Himself did, is the in-born quality of many Pastors which is an important ministerial strategy. The Gospel is too serious a matter to be presented in a serious manner. Humor is very valuable in evangelism and Christian communication because, humor breaks down barriers and can create ideas into people’s hearts. A joke or humorous situation is often very memorable. Humor has been shown to be an essential component of learning. Humor is one language that everyone can understand. It breaks down barriers between people. Most importantly, one can find even the biblical mandate to use humor if he goes through all chapters from Genesis to Revelation where God the Father, Jesus the son and the Holy Spirit, had used many sarcasms, irony and fun parables to teach eternal lessons from God. Jokes have to be viewed as cartoons used in journalism. Once Jesus had to bring in a humor when he said that it is difficult for a camel to go through the hole in a needle, when he wanted to bring home a point that it is extremely difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. If one imagines that this epithet, if drawn as a cartoon of a camel trying to enter the orifice in a needle, will instigate humor. If teaching is not mingled with humor, people may not listen to the Pastors. Research shows that when people laugh together, they not only enjoy themselves, but they are more receptive to new ideas. Thus humor is an essential component in communication. Prophets such as Isaiah (40:18-20; 41:5-7; 44:9-20) used humor in poking fun at idols to show the folly of idolatry. Preachers, who wisely use humor in preaching, connect with their congregation so that people pay attention and listen. Bare ideas plus complex arguments equal difficult communication. Ideas plus people and events equal more effective communication (Jesus’ parables, for example). Humor can creatively combine ideas, people and events. Humor may be overdone. Preachers are not to be stand-up comedians whose goal is to simply get a good laugh. Preachers aim at the conscience, so that people’s lives are changed through preaching. Humor is a back door to the conscience. "There is humor in the Bible, and in life. So there may be humor in preaching too. Preaching involves explaining the Bible so that people understand, illustrating the Bible so that people connect with the Bible, and applying the Bible so that people live out its truths" - L. Roy Taylor, General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America
