Synopsis

A young Merchant Navy officer, Adrian Miller is on shore leave and returns to the Warwickshire town and the orphanage in which he grew up, with the intention of tracing his real parents. At first people seem either unhelpful or deliberately obstructive. Then he meets Mary, an attractive young woman who is keen to help. The story unfolds as their detective work triggers flashbacks in time to the real events as they happened and details the devastation inflicted upon the city of Coventry and its inhabitants during the Blitz and the parallel experience of the people of Dresden. Significantly, the arrival of German POW's into the local community brings its own complications.Inevitably, the common thread is War and its effect on the lives of Mary’s and Adrian’s ancestors; the civilian casualties that history often overlooks. The Far Woods is a richly descriptive, poignant and sometimes tragically funny story of one man’s search that digs deep into local history and memories, changing not only his life, but those of many others along the way. The writer uses his own childhood experiences of the war years and successfully portrays the terrible reality faced by thousands of ordinary people in the industrial cities of Europe.
