Welcome to this fantastic new book containing 100 fantastic cryptogram puzzles!
If you've never played this addictive but tricky little mental teasers before, here is how to solve a cryptogram puzzle:
We've taken a quotation, phrase or saying, and we've substituted every letter in that phrase or saying for another letter (although occasionally a letter represents itself).
Crucially, we've been consistent with the substitution, so if 'S' in the phrase appears in the code as a 'T', then every instance of 'S' will also appear as a 'T'. You must then use your knowledge of the English and code-breaking skills to crack the cryptogram code and reveal the plaintext, that is, work out what the original quotation was by breaking the code.
To help you do this, we've included space for you to make notes on each page so you can test your theories as to what each letter could represent, and we've put the correct number of text entry boxes on each page for you to be able to write in the quotation once you've cracked the code.
There are various pieces of information that can help you solve a cryptogram puzzle. Remember that where a single letter appears, it is almost certainly the 'I' or the 'A'; two-letter words are often 'AN' or 'OF; a three-letter sequence that recurs several times is often 'THE'. Generally, remember that the letters E, T and A are the most common in English, so counting how many times a letter in the code appears can help you work out what it is most likely to be: the one that occurs the most times is often, but not always, the E. There are various other things you can bear in mind to help you try and crack each code, such as typical vowel/consonant patterns and more. And, the more you solve, the better you get, too.
We hope you enjoy tackling these 100 cryptogram puzzles and finding out what the quotations are and who their authors were. Good luck, and happy code-breaking!
