Synopsis

To get rid of poverty, why not just give very poor families with children $500 a month to spend any way they want? The parents would volunteer for the program. They would have to meet conditions on an ongoing basis to receive the money, but would not be required to work outside of the house. The money would be provided on a regular basis as long as the conditions were met. Americans’ reaction to the idea, I assume, would be negative. Most Americans today wouldn’t even seriously consider this option based to a large degree on their perception of the poor. The poor are seen as not responsible, not trying hard enough. They will just waste the money if you give it to them and buy a variety of frivolous things including alcohol and drugs. “They” are not like “us”. Where does this perception come from? First, most in the middle and upper classes don’t personally know any poor people or at least know them well. Friends and media are a major source of this perception. We hear examples of the poor’s laziness, their purchase of lobster, their standing idly around street corners, and see scads of candy and junk food in shopping baskets. Most also get their perceptions from the media. Every day we get a dose of what poor people are like. The “worst” of the poor most often make the news in drug, crime, and violence reports that “lead” local news casts. The “few” good ones are mentioned occasionally, often showing their great effort and, at least implicitly, their difference from the rest of the poor. A third source is politicians and think tanks telling about the poor, most often presenting them in a negative light and at least intimating that they are different from the rest of us.
