Synopsis

Jeff and Nguyen are traveling across America on the Amtrak train The Empire Builder. Dad is particularly pleased because he believes nothing dangerous can happen on a train. But, before the train has left Chicago, strange events start to happen. For one thing, there is a nasty quarrel between two businessmen in the sleeping room near to theirs. For another, the two boys are befriended by an eccentric author of crime novels. It is she who decides that a steamer trunk loaded in the baggage car must be investigated. So, at midnight, the boys find themselves bound for the freezing baggage car.
