Pet portrait artist Evie Bright’s faith in humanity reaches an all-time low when she has no choice but to take her bullied son, Bill, out of school. They move to an isolated cottage in Cambridgeshire with their five dogs to try and find some peace in their lives. However, when Bill starts seeing and talking to ghosts in Keepers Cottage, Evie’s inability to cope with this revelation, along with her own fear of the unknown, tests her relationship with her son to its limits. When the ghosts make it clear they need Evie to help them with something urgent she struggles to cope. Against her better judgement and for the sake of her son she tries to get to the bottom of what the ghosts urgently need her to do.Evie’s search for answers takes her back to the Jazz Age and post First World War Kansas City, USA, where racial hatred and inequality challenges even the strongest love. The story of family tragedy and enduring love that reaches across the world, across generations, and across the great divide between life and death helps restore Evie’s faith in mankind.
