Synopsis

Abstinence from Flesh is an address delivered at the Bible Christian Church in Salford, England in 1876. It was delivered by the Rev. James Clark, an activist in the early vegetarian movement in England. The Bible Christian Church was founded by the Rev. William Cowherd in 1809. Previously Cowherd had served as a curate to the Rev. John Clowes, a Swedenborgian minister in Manchester who remained in the established Church of England. In addition to following the doctrinal principles of Emanuel Swedenborg, the Bible Christian Church required its members to practice vegetarianism and abstinence from alcohol. It continued in existence for over 100 years, finally disbanding in 1930.
