Synopsis

•Why have I started to plan this pilgrimage?•Two gardens impressed me the most and not seen are: Japanese Garden at the Albert Kahn Museum and Japanese Garden at UNESCO/WHO in Geneva, Paris. •I have been thinking about to answer a simple (but not really) question of “What is Japanese Garden in Japan and Abroad” for some time.•I have seen some of the reputable gardens in Japan and in the North America for the last 50 years but I have visited only a few in Europe.•A number of Japanese gardens in Europe had been designed and constructed by my teachers, mentors and noted gardeners and friends.•Of late there has been a number of European based designer and researcher who published probably epoch making books, focusing on Japanese Garden in Europe.•I began to realize that I have to experience these gardens in order to adequately address the important questions.•Therefore an idea of making a pilgrimage to these gardens and listen to local people who uses, experience, manage and promote came about.•With above stated, I embarked on the pilgrimage covering:1.Description and history of each garden2.My impression of the garden3.Peoples perception of the garden4.Concern (past, present and future) and future plan of the garden presented by the owners or care givers of gardens5.Personal story of designers and related personals 6.Photograph7.I will visit some of reputable local gardens as well.Since I have started preparing for this pilgrimage, a number of gardens came up to my attention through books and conversation with friends and they were included in my initial list of gardens to be visited.I am going to write about my passage and impression about the garden to be visited and referenced to a series of photo graphs to begin with. This narrative will include some of the personal stories by designers and my encounter during the pilgrimage.
