Synopsis

One dark night, fired with love’s urgent longings went out unseen My house being now all stilled I cannot think of a greater text to begin these reflections on the Essential Good than the passage I have just written above from St. John of the Cross’ Dark Night of the Soul. First, it tells my readers much about the two stages at a point in their journey that is essential for Christian Perfection. Secondly, it reminds us of Gospel message to “strain forward to the prize awaiting us on high where Jesus awaits all of us who seek him in prayer and contemplation. The two stages? Come to him and remain in him. “Come to me, all you who are heavily burdened and I will give you rest, and learn some for I am meek and humble of heart; you will find rest for your souls.” “Remain in me, and let me remain in you.” Anyone who wants a masterly map of this journey can do no better, in my opinion, than reading and follow the writings of the Carmelite Masters: Sts. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, and St. John of the Cross, Elizabeth of the Trinity and Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. I would also like to make it clear that the range of language, theology, and philosophy that may or may not be required to understand each one of the Saints above will range greatly, but the reward for whatever preparation it takes to aspire to understand their teachings will be greatly rewarded. The Message The message in this set of reflections on the Essential Good is that of an observer on a journey to God of what he has observed in his experiences, from himself and others. However, since God is the most valuable and everlasting Good, our writing has focused on his very Being as God and Father who set to us his Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Theologically, the message is sound and in accordance with the Teachings of the Catholic Church and the Carmelite and Jesuit Schools of Spirituality. Practically, my reflections are as relevant as to most recent and past experiences can extend my reflections. What hope of understanding do I have for those who read these reflections and what I hope they will carry away? I hope my readers will walk away with the understanding that God is our only true and lasting Good and remaining united with him means eternal life for us. Philosophically, he is the One Good who can be known by unaided human reason naturally; on the other hand, he is the One Essential Good revealed to us thru revelation both in the Old and New Testament. Personally, he is the Word made flesh for us and is “God from God, light from light, and true God from true God.” He is the Essential Good that is the Object of all the Beatified Saints. From the perspective of the Church, he is the Word that speaks to us daily in the Liturgy of the Word and celebrated on the Altars, and remains in Tabernacles in the Catholic Churches throughout the world and who will remain with us until the end of time. The Essential Good is he who was spoken by the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews and said “Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.” The Messengers The messengers are many, but the Message of The Essential Good, is One. Nothing in creation can bring us closer to God on this journey than faith, since faith has that essential likeness to God.], Hope, and Love are our greatest messengers of God, since they bring us direct contact with The Essential Good. Let us vigilantly practice faith, hope, and love. Let us continually remain united to Jesus Christ, The Essential Good. "The Father and I are One." "He who sees me, sees the Father."
