Synopsis

From Rags to (real) Riches: The Autobiography of Frank Cesario

As with many immigrants after World War II, Frank received some help from established generations of Italians when he arrived in the United States. When he married Palma, he not only gained a perfect partner but also access to the network of Pizzonesi paesani. Frank's Calabrese identity provided connections to Chicago's Italian American community and made their family business in real estate and travel possible.

However, a positive environment alone does not tell the most important part of the story. Frank and Palma had a strong work ethic and religious beliefs that gave them the patience and character to endure and thrive in the US. Their story proves that despite its acknowledged flaws, the American Dream is still achievable. This second version going to press in early 2025 adds detailed descriptions and photos depicting Frank’s participation in Italian American organizations. It is important because of what it tells us about the ways that Italians in Chicago created the social capital that allowed them to generate acceptance and social mobility in Chicago’s multi-ethnic framework.

For forty years, I have been dedicated to preserving and sharing Italian American history and culture. We often feel that our Italian immigrant heritage is at risk of being lost. However, people like Frank Cesario serve as an inspiring model for all to record their history for posterity. The Casa Italia Library and Archive is grateful to Frank for giving them this authentic and inspiring model.
