Face and Heart is a song about the ancient Aztec people who lived in the area of what is now Mexico City from 1300 to 1521. Their capitol city was Tenochtitlán. The Aztecs were a proud people who ruled over Central Mexico, and who considered children their most precious resource. The Aztec elders taught their children to be very respectful towards others. These rules were called the Huehuetlatolli or “words of the elders.” Part of this training included teaching their young the universal truth of their concept of “face and heart.” The Aztecs believed that the face represents your character, the basis of honesty and integrity; your heart, love and compassion for your fellow man. Together, an Aztec who exhibited a balance of both was deemed a quality member of society.
