New Year’s Day 2019. You were in Minneapolis Minnesota for the holiday season. You arrived there December 22. You went to Minneapolis mainly to see your grown kids, Maya (30), who lives in New York, where she was born in the first place, and Nelson (28), who lives in Palo Alto California, where he’s attending Stanford University for his MBA. Your current wife, Zooey, was not in Minneapolis with you. She had stayed behind in Ventimiglia, where you lived on the Italian Riviera, close to the French border, with your twins Natalia and Sarah, who are now a little over a year old. (Menton in France was just 10 minutes away by train.)2008. Minneapolis. Starbucks, the one in Dinkytown, by the University of Minnesota East Bank campus. You were working on your laptop, with ear buds plugged in. You always have a copy of your BBC News press pass pasted on the backend of your laptop. A woman with jet-black frizzy hair was working opposite you on her own laptop with ear buds plugged as well. The place was packed with students and professors and mostly employees of the University of Minnesota. When she got up to go to the bar for more coffee, you saw she was wearing a black skirt, black leggings, black combat boots, black fedora, and a black motorcycle leather jacket. She looked Jewish, and she had olive skin. At one point you decided to freshen your own coffee. You went to the bar. When you got back, the woman gave you furtive glances. Finally, she pulled off her earbuds and asked: --You, like, work for the BBC?
