Basics of Layer-2 LAN Switching: A Switching Guide for BSIT Students of Network Systems Track is designed to aid the students in understanding the concepts of switching in the Cisco environment easily. This book introduces and extends the students' knowledge and practical experience, enabling them to develop the important skills related to designing and configuring LAN and maintaining switches. The concepts discussed in this book empower the students to be prepared, execute standards, and design networks in the ideal approach through implementing best switching practices. The Goal of this Book This book aims to educate students about Cisco technologies and help them understand how a network is being created and designed and how Cisco devices are being configured. It is used as an aggregated reference for BSIT major in networks systems. The audience for this book This book is written for BSIT majors in Network Systems of Higher Education Institutions and a guide for IT Instructors. This book could be used as a guide or textbook in the classroom and in laboratory sessions as a lab manual. Organization of the book This book is organized according to the following divisions: Chapter 1 presents an overview of the layer-2 switching concepts and some switching terminologies. Chapter 2 presents an overview of the different switching modes. Chapter 3 covers the basic switching configuration to manage a Cisco switch Chapter 4 discusses the PortFast, BPDU guard, BPDU filter, UplinkFast, BackboneFast, and loop guard spanning-tree enhancement on the catalyst enterprise LAN switches. This also covers the STP, RSTP, and MSTP. Chapter 5 provides information regarding the process of Virtualizing Local Area Networking, its advantages, and its benefits. Chapter 6 discuss the VTP process as a technique for VLAN creation Chapter 7 covers the Inter-VLAN communication of each VLAN using a router. Chapter 8 discuss the concepts of Link aggregation or EtherChannel, the standards of Link bonding accepted in the field. Chapter 9 covers the configuration and basics of VOIP telephony service in the VLAN setup
