This work suggests that voting is a pointless enterprise.Opinion spouters will tell you that if you do not vote you have nothing to say. They think that voting gives you a voice that non-voters are not possessed of. Voters go to the polling station, use the pencil provided, pop their say in the box and then they go home and wait, they wait five years for an opportunity to have another say. The spouters say that this is democracy at work, citizens having their say.Governments over the past forty years have handed over the responsibility for running the country to private contractors, with a pathetic performance record. Our politicians are either duplicitous fools or ineffective spectators. And some are simply harmless stooges queuing on Parliament Green to deliver vacuous soundbites for the media, before returning to shine the Commons’ benches with their backsides, whilst waiting for elevation to the Upper Chamber. In the meantime, corporate lobbyists will not be voting or waiting, they will have the ear of this or that minister behaving like a cab for hire in the ‘mother of parliaments’. They will be there at Davos and a Bilderberg Club gathering, having their say, shaping a world that failed to appear in the party manifestos.
