Seasons of a Civilization tackles the difficult topic of Western civilization's slow decline. It introduces and reinforces the notion that societies, empires and civilizations 'follow an evolutionary process that has four seasonal stages', which, shows developmental markers: 'birth, growth, reproduction and death'. It takes the reader through a chronology of history to show these seasonal changes and their social and political trends. The book is structured in a logical and progressive sequence of ideas. The reader is gradually introduced to how social seasonal change takes place and the consequences of this change. People reading this book will get a better insight as to where we are in the seasonal cycle and its effect on future generations. This could draw interest from people interested in the historical, social, political and environmental issues. Like many organic systems in nature, our societies have seasons. These seasons follow patterns of behaviour that indicate the stages of society’s development, analogous to that found in the four seasonal periods of temperate zones, winter, spring, summer and autumn; except the seasons of civilization are not governed by climatic change, but by the development of societies. The traits in our nature set the agenda expressed in the seasons of a society. That agenda drives growth (spring), seeding (summer) and decay (autumn), preparing for regeneration (winter), a pattern that has occurred many times in human history. Civilizations are assumed to be symbols of human progress when in fact they are transitional phases of evolutionary change. Nature’s evolutionary design has crafted traits in our behaviour which build nations, and civilizations then bring them to an end. We can change these events only if we understand the behaviours that produce social and political trends and the seasons that develop from them. There is a need to see ourselves as part of an evolutionary system. Nature designed our behaviours to fulfil its requirements, not to give us a happy existence. There is a need to recognize where our civilization is in terms of the seasonal cycles to avoid continuing down the same calamitous path many societies have taken. We are now in the social season of autumn and are facing many issues such as global warming, resource depletion, powerful commercial interests overriding community concerns and a general erosion of social values. Technology is reducing our physical and emotional contact with each other. Consumerism is feeding greed and addictions. People are losing, have almost lost, a sense of community and national and social pride, which previously had kept us together. An awareness of these seasons of civilization and of the behaviour exhibited in a season will give us the knowledge to make adjustments to create a better outcome than has occurred in past societies.
