Synopsis
Described as a reflective/humorous memoir, Afterwards is a collection of essays that originally appeared on the Impractical Cogitator's website. The tone of the pieces range from philosophical (I'm in Here Somewhere) to elegiac (Not Ready to Say Goodnight). Much of the matter in between veers towards wry observation of every facet of life in the country, whimsy and wordplay. As the author notes, "This collection was originally entitled Bertha and the Blueberry Country Club for Cats, a reference to one of the essays, a whimsical description of a fragment of conversation overheard, a silly piece, one that amused the author and was an excellent example of the mildly humorous observations contained herein. There's no doubt that a cat themed book would have been far more successful than the obscure musings of an obscure writer, but as the author has been untroubled by success thus far, there was no need to bamboozle cat fanciers in presenting the rich tapestry of life as it fumbles along from age to age. " Good natured short essays on subjects from raising children to baseball's heroes provide diverting observations, whimsical at times, but free of bamboozlement.
