If you’re anything like me, you’re fascinated by overnight success stories. Most of us can rattle off at least a few names from any career field that seem to have appeared out of no where, taking the world by storm and blowing their peers away with their talent, charisma and natural ability. But as any of these highly successful people will tell you, “overnight success” is often years, even decades in the making. And I guarantee those years are not spent by a musician wishing he could play the guitar better, an athlete hitting the weights only when she feels like it, or a business person waiting for someone to appear on his doorstep with a check. No, the years leading up to the birth of a success are filled with perseverance and hard work, often according to a plan. A formula. A science, if you will.My start in any of the fields I’ve thrived in has always been at the very bottom. I never started with any valuable professional contacts or a pot of cash to invest, so the systems I developed have been, and continue to be, absolutely critical. My primary reason for sharing this valuable information is that I want to help business people like me, people who don’t have contacts in their field quite yet, don’t have much to invest, don’t have a Plan B or a safety net if they fail, and have the audacity to set some very ambitious goals for themselves. As I write this, I’m a co-owner ofa successful fast-casual restaurant in the process of opening its third location. I’m an agency owner for one of the largest insurance companies in the nation. In my three years with this company, I’ve written over $100 million in liability insurance, I triple my monthly quotas on a regular basis, I’ve doubled my 3-year sales goal, and I’ve won District Agent of the Year in my category. I’ve qualified for every promotion put on by my very generous district manager, and have earned paid vacations to Monterey, San Diego, Las Vegas, Cabo San Lucas, and Disneyland. Before that, I sold alarm and surveillance systems for the largest home- security company in the nation. I was the very first out of my local office to qualify for a paid overseas vacation for the top 2% of national salespeople (I did this three separate times), I was at least 100% to quota every single year of my employment (one particular year I was 245% to quota), and I recorded a 90% closing rate when I moved on from that company. But even before that, I had dropped out of high school. My parents, fed up with my general nonsense, ad kicked me out of the house and I was crashing in a friend’s garage. I was one chance past my last one with my boss at a minimum-wage job, who was also fed up with my general [usually alcohol-fueled] nonsense. Believe me, I’ve seen the bottom. How did I make it from a onetime high school dropout living in a friend’s garage to the owner of two successful, growing businesses? You guessed it: science. I organized myself and approached my fledgling career like a scientist, isolating categories I could focus on and identifying naturally- occurring patterns I could reinforce. And since sales is the career path I’ve chosen, it’s been the science of prospecting, specifically, that’s helped me climb to where I am now. And it will be this science that I base my activities and business decisions on in the future, no matter how successful I become. The science of prospecting that I’ve detailed will maximize your time, keep you on top, and increase your income.
