Synopsis

The last term of the Drake Equation for estimating the number of advanced civilizations in the galaxy that could be contacted is how long one survives, or wants to be contacted. The primary goal of the Institute of Theoretical Physics on the North Shore of Lake Superior was to find the means for humans to go to another habitable planet in case they ruined the one they were on, which they believed they were well on the way of doing. In the first book they were able to go to another planet, which they named Hovland, despite the restriction that the distance to a possible habitable planet is really, really far away and you can never, never go faster than the speed of light. Thank you Albert Einstein for finding that out, which pretty much negated most of the science fiction in print, but they got around that by using quantum entanglement and an unusual effect of black holes. They enlisted the financial help of a billionaire tech company owner who was told they were able to go to Hovland with the help of, Max, an incredibly powerful quantum computer, and Susan, an attractive alien lady from God-knows-where who worked on Earth for decades to help develop science to the point where she could go home. Hovland was full of alien life forms in the sea and ponds similar to Earth in the Cambrian period. This was candy for biologists and biochemists, who the Institute hired in droves, with the understanding that they could not publish or tell anyone about what they were finding. The Institute ran into trouble with a new American President who wanted to shut them down and get rid of Max, who was able to detect and interfere with his party's devious campaign tactics that got him elected. To prevent that, the Institute moved just across the border to Canada enlisting the help of the Canadian Government by providing them some of the advanced technology they had developed. Realizing he was not going to be reelected, the President sent a bomber to take out Max and the Institute, along with issuing a national emergency over global warming, even though he believed it to be a hoax. Unfortunately, global warming was real and the last term of the Drake Equation was kicking in.
