The genus Danio is made up of 25 species. The name ‘danio’ is derived from the Bangla name dhani, which means “of the rice field.” Danios are native to the fresh water rivers and streams of South and Southeast Asia. Most Danios have two pairs of long barbels (which look like whiskers), a long horizontal stripe, vertical bars and neat rows of spots. In the wild the Danio’s consists of other small fish, small aquatic insects, worms, plankton, crustaceans and even their own fry. In the aquarium they become omnivores and will happily eat any standard fish food. It is important to note that Danios are aggressive eaters and may cause more timid species to starve in community tanks. Due to their interesting appearance and ease of feeding the Danio genus has become a very popular aquatic pet.
