Eddie Jr. and Mindy can’t wait to start a family of their own. Actually they wind up with a little more than they were thinking about, but their attitude is the more, the merrier. The doctor announces that we are going to have some new members of the family in the very near future and if I want to stay with Mindy I better change into scrubs. After I get changed and they get Mindy ready they put us in a birthing room. Emma and Izzie ask Mindy if it will bother her if they order a pizza. The doctor asks them what kind of pizza they are ordering and Gramma tells them to order at least two or three because unless she is mistaken we will have quite a bit of company as soon as everybody knows the babies are coming. The nurse on duty tells them to get at least one with sausage, pepperoni, and mushrooms. The labor is increasing as are the number of family members that are coming to the hospital. Mindy and I are discussing names for our babies whenever she is not working her way through a contraction. It’s right after she has a particularly long contraction when the doctor comes in eating a piece of pizza that Mindy tells her that she feels like pushing. The doctor tells her it is still a little early for that, but she will check to make sure. She checks and tells Mindy to go ahead and push on the next contraction. The doctor turns to get something ready when Mindy pushes and I have to catch our son. The doctor looks around and tells me that she gets paid even if we do all the work and takes our son away from me and clears his throat and nostrils so he can breathe. I get to cut the umbilical cord and the doctor lets Mindy hold him. It is only a few minutes before our daughter is born. She is somewhat larger than our son, but apparently they are both healthy. Again I cut the cord and the doctor does her thing and lets Mindy hold our daughter. The nurse takes her and hands her a piece of paper. It says that our son weighs four pounds and twelve ounces and is seventeen inches long. She comes back with another piece of paper saying that our daughter weighs six pounds and two ounces and is nineteen inches long. The doctor is taking care of Mindy while Mom and Gramma help the nurses with the babies. Both babies are crying. Our son sounds so small it makes me want to hold him and protect him. Actually they both do, but he just sounds so helpless. Finally Mindy can hold them both and nurse them for the first time. We have a steady procession of family members coming in to see Mindy and the babies. Everyone asks us what the names are going to be and we have to tell them we haven’t decided yet. Finally everyone that came up to the hospital has seen the babies and Mindy is getting pretty tired so I tell her to get some sleep and I will sit here next to her and watch our babies. When Eddie Jr. gets home from a road trip he finds out that it may be a while before he can get any rest and relaxation.
