All basic and applied life science research requires microorganisms as study specimens. Managing Microorganisms is the standard reference for anyone who works with microorganisms, primarily bacteria and fungi, but also algae and protozoa, yeasts, animal and human cells etc. It is applicable to researchers who maintain their own collections of strains, and those who use a public service culture collection. The book includes coverage of: methods of preservation and characterization for different groups of microorganisms; best practice guidelines for culture collection management; how to protect investment in research with microorganisms; where to source microorganisms; how to store, handle and distribute microorganisms effectively and safely; how to design a sustainable business plan for a culture collection; health and safety issues, and the regulatory environment. Essential for academic researchers and students in applied life sciences, including biology, agriculture, medicine and biotechnology. Anyone working with microorganisms and culture collections, also consultants, biotechnologists and bioindustry.

David Smith has 44 years at CABI and is currently Director of Biological Resources with a long history of managing a living fungal collection; developing and managing projects on conservation and use of microorganisms having presented over 150 conference papers and 180 publications, including 2 books and 25 book chapters. Matt J. Ryan is the Curator of the CABI living collection which incorporates the UK National Collection of Fungus Cultures. He manages the general operations and research programs of the collection and he shares his expert knowledge of cryopreservation, pure and applied mycology, biodeterioration and natural product research. Alan Buddie is a Senior Molecular Microbiologist (and Biochemist) specializing in applied microbiology and molecular biology of fungi, bacteria and nematodes (including systematics, phylogenetics, biomics, DNA extraction techniques & PCR methodology). He is a taxonomic specialist for fungi (including moulds, yeasts and oomycetes) and bacteria within CABI's ISO17025-accredited microbial identification service. He has significant experience in microbial population dynamics & genomic variability whilst also providing capabilities in biochemical techniques (including chromatographic methods, mycotoxin screening and data analysis).
