Integrated pest management (IPM), is a sustainable crop protection strategy to ensure pre-harvest control of invertebrate (mainly insect) pests, whilst seeking to minimise negative environment or ecosystem impacts, and improve human health. This book represents all aspects of IPM in southern Africa, from designing projects to implementing decisions, and including research, field experience and selected case studies. This book will address themes such as basic IPM principles, cultural and physical control methods, behavioural control methods, biological control, insecticide resistance management, ecosystem services provided by insects in agro-ecosystems and biosecurity. The book is especially relevant to those working in areas of agricultural sustainability, food security, applied entomology, pest management and crop protection.

Minette Karsten is the crop protection research programme manager at Hortgro and a seconded researcher at the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Her research focuses on applied entomology, integrated pest management and invasion biology, with a primary interest in using molecular and other tools (for example physiology and morphometrics) to answer questions important for the prevention and management of invasions and integrated pest management mainly using fruit fly pests as case studies, but also other insect pests of deciduous fruit.
John Terblanche graduated with a PhD in Zoology in 2006 from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He is currently a full Professor in the Department of Conservation Ecology & Entomology where he leads a physiological ecology research group. John has authored or co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, many of which are published in top international journals, and holds an B1 rating from the South African National Research Foundation. John's research focuses on how invertebrates cope with diverse, and often concurrent, challenges in terrestrial environments, with an emphasis on quantifying ecologically relevant stress. He is also interested in the application of physiological responses to species' management, such as biological invasions or pest management. Terblanche is currently the co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Insect Physiology.
