Understanding the Impact of Trauma explores the concept of ‘emotional disability’ - a consequence of an early traumatic event that may be displayed in an individual through complex behavioural patterns and indicate that emotional development was arrested at the point of trauma.
The book considers some of the clinical tools for assessing the impact of trauma on individuals, and reflects on how therapeutic models developed for specific populations might be applied more broadly and effectively across health and social care settings. It includes an accessible overview of the key theories that have informed our understanding of the emotional development of people with intellectual disabilities, a field in which the author has worked extensively, alongside case studies focusing on different individuals and exploring how their emotional development informed therapeutic interventions. These case studies include people with intellectual disabilities, people with mental health issues, autistic people and people living with dementia. There is a particular focus on the use and adaptation of the author’s Frankish Assessment of the Impact of Trauma in Intellectual Disability (FAIT), which since its publication in 2019 has begun to be used more widely to inform a variety of therapeutic interventions and care packages.

It will introduce some of the key theories that have informed our understanding of the emotional development of people with intellectual disabilities, followed by a series of case studies focusing on different individuals and how their emotional development informed their therapeutic interventions, including people with intellectual disabilities, people with mental health issues, people living with dementia and autistic people.
