Hello everyone,
A few years ago, I participated in making ‘Generations’, first created as a one-off film and now developed into a two-part series, written, produced, and directed by M Wilfrid Pickering. After applying for the role of ‘Simian the Wise’, I met the film’s Casting Director and learned about Simian’s depth and quirky, mystical powers. I was captivated by the story, and the more I discovered about the wizard’s role, the more determined I became to portray him. After reading the full script, I realised it would be a demanding but rewarding part, as Simian was a complex character with hidden depths. I welcomed the challenge of working with the cast and crew to bring this remarkable production to life, so I was delighted to accept the role of Simian. None of us expected the film to take more than four years to complete.
Although I had played many roles in theatre and film, I had never played a wizard, so this was a fresh and exciting experience. Filming took place across Derby and the beautiful countryside of the Peak District, Amber Valley, and the Dales. Between woodland scenes and during breaks from filming, I would wander among the old trees until I found a quiet spot in the greenery. There, I imagined my fellow actors blending with the characters in my wizard’s woodland tales. In those peaceful moments—broken only by birdsong and the rustle of small creatures in the undergrowth—I began to picture how these characters might reflect people I know, and how they could come to life in the stories you are about to read or hear. There is something timeless about standing among ancient and younger trees alike. Woodlands change little over the centuries; it is people, folklore and the occasional magical being that come and go. The forests remain, along with the wildlife and mystery that dwell within them.
Like me, I hope you enjoy these tales of intrigue and mystery.
Edward W Wright
