For El Sur, Julio Mitchel, has combined images of his work from Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. The images were taken during multiple treks the artist made from the 1980s to 2000. Incorporating both black and white pictures alongside colour portraits, Mitchel views El Sur as essentially two books combined as one. 'While violence is present in some images, my main focus is its underlaying causes: poverty, corruption, race and class inequality, a brutal and corrupt military, and an often corrupt clergy. As such, I have chosen to bypass individual captions in order to emphasize my overarching thesis: One nation, one set of problems.'

Julio Mitchel (b. Havana, Cuba, in 1942), moved to New York City when he was seventeen-years-old. He studied photography under renowned photographer Lisette Model at the New School, which helped shape his unique documentary style. His work has been widely exhibited internationally including at the Museum of Modern Art (IVAM) in Spain, the Musée de l'Elysée in Switzerland, Galerie Vier Berlin in Germany, and the Rencontres d'Arles festival in France, and is held in major permanent collections, among them the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), the International Center of Photography, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Polaroid International Collection.
