Synopsis

The world premiere of a recently discovered opera by Verdi.

A star tenor who’s been receiving threatening letters.

An orchestra that suddenly finds it possible to follow the conductor.

When private investigator Edwin Strong takes on an undercover role in the orchestra office of London Opera, he has no idea that he's also going to be solving a murder, or that there will be so many people who might have committed it.

Before long the investigation will be dangling by a thread, as will Edwin.

The show must go on. But will it?

London Opera has pulled off a spectacular coup by becoming the first company in the world to present Verdi's recently discovered La Svolta Reale. Unperformed during the composer's lifetime, due to its political content, it's been unearthed with the assistance of the chair of London Opera's board. Edwin Strong, back in harness after his post-Tour de France counselling sessions, is brought in to investigate a series of threatening letters, but things escalate rapidly when the conductor collapses at the end of the dress rehearsal and the ambulance which takes him away disappears. There seem to be plenty of people happy to see the back of Maestro, but then Edwin has a flash of insight which turns the investigation on its head. Or at least shifts it sideways a little. Events begin moving faster and faster as the drama behind the scenes threatens to eclipse what’s happening in the spotlights.
