Synopsis

Discover the extraordinary German poets of the First World War—voices of terror, grief, irony and startling invention that English-language readers have too rarely heard.

The Other Trench brings together seventy poems by eleven German-language poets, presented in the original German with new English translations on facing pages. From the fractured intensity of August Stramm and the dark irony of Alfred Lichtenstein to the haunting visions of Georg Trakl, Georg Heym, Gerrit Engelke and others, these poems reveal the war from the other side of the trenches.

They speak from battlefields, cities, military camps and private nightmares. Some confront combat and death directly; others capture the anxiety, alienation and violent transformation of the world around them.

A compelling rediscovery for readers of war poetry, German literature, Expressionism and literary modernism, this complete bilingual edition includes:

• Seventy poems in German and English
• Facing-page translations for direct comparison
• Work by eleven German-language poets
• Poetry of the First World War and its imaginative aftermath
• New translations that preserve the originals’ rhythm and linguistic strangeness
