In the winter of 1904, a revival swept through Wales. Within two months, more than 70,000 people had publicly professed faith. By spring 1905 the total passed 85,000. Miners prayed underground. Chapels stayed open until the early hours. Magistrates had no cases to try. Crowds followed young Evan Roberts from town to town.

Yet Jessie Penn-Lewis, one of the movement's closest observers, argues that the revival did not begin in 1904. It began years earlier, in quiet places:

  • a mountainside prayer meeting of four teenage boys
  • women meeting in a small Welsh town to pray for their neighbours
  • thirteen people praying at Keswick for a convention in Wales
  • a dying Welsh Dean's last message to his nation
  • prayer circles springing up around the world, some in Australia, some in India, and some in the U.S.A, seemingly without any central plan

This book tells the story from these hidden beginnings to the great "tidal wave" itself. It takes in the valleys of the south, the villages of the north, and the colleges. Then it asks a challenging question: what does this teach the Church today?
