How far can a man run from himself before he finally has to turn around?
In The Storm I Created, Steven Bernardoni tells the unflinching story of a life spent searching for relief, belonging, and meaning in all the wrong places.
Growing up in Connecticut amid family conflict and an inner world dominated by anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviors, Steven learned early how to hide what was happening beneath the surface. Then, at fourteen, he discovered alcohol. For the first time, the relentless noise inside his mind seemed to disappear.
What began as escape gradually became a way of life.
Through adolescence and adulthood, drinking followed Steven through relationships, reckless choices, fatherhood, loss, and mounting consequences. Yet alcohol was only one part of his search. Desperate for identity and spiritual meaning, he ventured deeper into witchcraft and the occult, eventually becoming a high priest and traveling as far as Europe while pursuing a sense of power and purpose that remained painfully out of reach.
Behind every new identity, however, was the same man still trying to escape himself.
Then, as 1993 began, Steven put down a glass of champagne at a New Year's gathering and made a decision that would divide his life into two parts: before sobriety and after it.
Recovery did not erase the past. It demanded that he finally face it.
With raw honesty and hard-earned perspective, Steven recounts the work of becoming a present father, surviving the end of a marriage without returning to alcohol, confronting the damage he had caused, rebuilding relationships, and discovering a faith rooted not in performance or control, but in grace. Over decades of sobriety, recovery became more than something he practiced. It became the foundation on which he rebuilt his life.
The Storm I Created is not a story about a man who got everything right. It is the story of a man who survived long enough to change.
Candid, unsettling, spiritual, and ultimately hopeful, this memoir is for anyone who has struggled with addiction, shame, family wounds, destructive patterns, or the exhausting search for something outside themselves to make the pain disappear.
Because no matter how long the storm has been raging, a different life may still be possible.
