Before fingerprints could be matched across state lines, a killer could marry, poison and move on.
Between the 1880s and the early 1960s, killers moved across the United States and Canada faster than the police who pursued them. Rail lines, lonely-hearts columns and rooming houses gave them cover. Municipal forces without shared records or modern forensic science rarely saw a pattern until a relative, a doctor or a single persistent detective forced the question.
The Halcroft Files, Volume 1 collects thirty cases from those decades: Belle Gunness on her La Porte farm, Johann Otto Hoch and his string of brides, Earle Leonard Nelson on his road from San Francisco to Winnipeg, Albert Fish, Nannie Doss, Ed Gein, Carl Panzram and the torso killings that defeated Eliot Ness in Cleveland.
Each entry opens with a case file of dates, aliases, method, arrest, sentence and current status. The narrative that follows keeps apart what courts proved, what investigators attributed and what rumor and confession added. Victims are named wherever the record allows, and every case is brought up to date to September 2026.
