9781835451861: Optimising Bio-Based Fertilisation for a More Sustainable Agriculture

Synopsis

Improvements in plant nutrition and fertilisation are central to any transition to a more sustainable agriculture. In addition to ways of improving nutrient use efficiency, a key area to investigate further is the transition from relying primarily on inorganic fertilisers to a greater use of organic sources of nutrition.

Optimising bio-based fertilisation for a more sustainable agriculture provides a comprehensive overview of the recent research undertaken in this area, focussing primarily on the role of differing types of soil amendments and their contribution to improvements in soil organic matter content, nutrient availability, crop growth and yields. The book also reviews recent advances in biostimulants, such as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, and considers optimising their use to promote crop health and nutrient use efficiency.

À propos des auteurs

Dr Ruben Sakrabani is Professor of Soil Chemistry in the Centre for Soil, Agrifood and Biosciences at Cranfield University, UK. He has an international reputation particularly for his research on the nutrient dynamics, resource use efficiency and reliability of organic amendments such as compost, manure, slurry, biosolids, biochar and digestates. He is also a Peer Review College member of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) responsible for research funding in environmental science. He sits on the Advisory Board of Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association (ADBA) and is a technical committee member for the British Standard Institute CII/37 - Fertilisers and related chemicals and for the European Committee for Standardization CEN TC 260/WG 8 - Organic and organo-mineral fertilizers.

Marcelo Galdos is an environmental scientist and sustainability innovation leader specialising in soil health, climate change mitigation, and sustainable agricultural systems. His work focuses on the role of crop residues and organic amendments in improving soil carbon storage, nutrient cycling, and resilience of farming systems under climate stress. He has published extensively in leading international journals and advises governments, agri-food companies, and farmers on climate-smart and regenerative farming practices.

Dr Christina van Midden is a researcher in soils, crops and the environment with an interest in recycling organic materials in agriculture. She is experienced in the design and running of experimental research to evaluate the viability and environmental impact of using novel and traditional organic material products in agriculture. Dr van Midden is also the principal designer of Dirty Matters the Soil game, which was created as an accessible and fun educational tool to demonstrate the role of sustainable agricultural soil management to meet UN Sustainable Development Goals of Zero Hunger, Clean Water and Climate Action.

Dr. Xiuping Jiang is a Professor in Food Microbiology at the Department of Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences, Clemson University. Her research interests focus on understanding how foodborne pathogens persist in food, on surfaces and in pre-harvest environment, and developing the strategies to detect and control these pathogens.

David Houben is Associate Professor in Soil Science within the AGHYLE research unit (Agroecology, Hydrogeochemistry, Environments and Resources) at UniLaSalle (France). His research explores soil–plant interactions and biogeochemical processes to improve the sustainability and multifunctionality of agroecosystems. He has made major contributions to understanding phosphorus dynamics, the use of organic amendments such as biochar and insect frass, and the restoration of degraded soils.
