Synopsis
Alan Little inherited his father’s bookmaking business but not his talent for it. Struggling to keep afloat, he clings to daydreams of Alice Teqar, the beautiful woman from his school days, and the rescue of his father’s old assistant, Herbert, who looks at him with thinly veiled disdain. Then, in lieu of a debt, Alan receives a bizarre contraption: a time machine. Nonsense, of course. But if it worked, think of the possibilities. A few well-placed bets on races he already knows the results of could solve all his problems. To his astonishment, the machine works. But time travel, as Alan quickly discovers, is far more complicated and dangerous than he ever imagined. A clever and amusing adventure through the perils of tampering with the past.

Nonsense of course. but if it did work what golden opportunities there are! All that is required is a trip back into the past and place wagers in races in which he already knows the result. Of course, the machine just has be tried, doesn't it? To his amazement the machine does actually work. But! And isn't there always a but? Everything turns out to be far more complicated than he could have possibly imagined, and he finds himself in all kinds of trouble in this inventive and amusing time-travel fantasy.
