Synopsis

A nostalgic, candid and entertaining reflection on six decades of the World Cup from Brian Barwick OBE – former BBC and ITV executive and former CEO of the FA.

During his 60-year relationship with the World Cup, Brian witnessed many of the tournament's most famous matches, most gifted players and coaches and iconic moments; meeting colourful personalities, making record-breaking TV programmes and even helping an operatic aria to become a worldwide smash hit! Highlights include:

  • 1966 – Pickles, Pelé and ‘People are on the pitch …’: the 1966 World Cup comes to England; Brian is at Goodison Park as the world’s most famous footballer, Pelé, is ‘kicked’ out of the tournament, and on a glorious day in July England win the World Cup; over the next 50 years Brian meets all the men who made English football history that day
  • 1982 – Brian’s first professional trip to a World Cup as a BBC producer gave him a ticket and backstage pass to see the Rolling Stones in Madrid, courtesy of his then BBC colleague and World Cup legend, Bobby Charlton
  • 1986 – Those two Maradona goals – a mix of sheer class and unapologetic cunning – and England’s Gary Lineker takes home the competition’s Golden Boot (Brian would help Lineker launch his second career as a leading TV presenter)
  • 1990 – Gazza, ‘Big Jack’ and Pavarotti: in charge of the BBC’s World Cup coverage, Brian reflects on its many memorable aspects, and how the BBC’s choice of an operatic aria as its theme tune set off a remarkable public reaction that still resonates today
  • 2006 – On the flight deck with coach, Sven-Göran Eriksson, and team captain, David Beckham, as the England party leaves to fly to Germany for the 2006 World Cup; the author, then the FA’s CEO, reflects on the sense of anticipation both on the aircraft and back on the ground, the excitement of progressing through the tournament and the personal agony of yet another penalty shoot-out exit

Seen through the eyes of a unique up-close witness to each tournament, this is the ultimate guide to the World Cup across six unforgettable decades. A must-read for every football fan.
